'They're still with us:' Local nonprofit holds 'Remembrance Walk' to honor fallen soldiers

BOALSBURG, Pa (WJAC) — Remembering fallen soldiers. That was the message at Saturday’s “Walk to Remember” 5K in Boalsburg. The second annual “Walk to Remember” at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg was hosted by the nonprofit “A Soldiers Hands.” The founder of the organization, Trish Shallenberger, says that there was a lack of events like the walk in Centre County. She says they want residents to have the chance to honor those that they love.

Country music star Miranda Lambert to perform at PNG Field as part of MiLB concert series

ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — Country music star Miranda Lambert will be performing at the Altoona Curve's PNG Field this summer as part of a nationwide concert series. The three-time Grammy award winner will perform in Altoona on Friday, June 7th as the first event in the MiLB's "Music on the Diamond" concert series. “Our fans have been asking for several years for us to bring in more concerts and events, so I was thrilled when DBH brought us the opportunity to kick off the entire series right here in Altoona.

Westmont grad makes history at Military College

Cambria County, Pa. (WJAC) — It was a historic weekend in the military community. The Corps of Cadets for two senior military colleges -- Citadel and VMI -- are both commanded by women. Saturday morning, they got to meet each other for the first time during a parent's weekend, parade, and football game between the colleges. One of those women, Cadet First Captain Kasey Meredith (the Regimental Commanding Officer of the Virginia Military Commander Corps of Cadets) is from right here in Johnstown.

Window falls from hotel near Las Vegas Strip injuring guest

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A scare right off the Las Vegas Strip after a window broke off a resort, falling and hurting a person. Hilton Grand Vacations, who owns and operates the Elara Grand Vacations, confirmed one guest was injured after the glass from the window fell. At this time, it is unclear which of the 56 floors the window fell from. A spokesperson shared the following statement: The safety of our members, guests and team members is always our top priority.

Woman dies after crash on RT 322 in Philipsburg

PHILIPSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — One person has died following a two-vehicle crash in Philipsburg. Pennsylvania State Police in Rockview identified the victim as Taylor Harpster, 27, of Philipsburg. The crash between an SUV and tractor trailer happened around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Railroad Street and East Pine Street in Philipsburg Borough. Police said Harpster failed to negotiate a curve and crossed the center line hitting the tractor trailer head on.

Ferndale grad Trey McGough selected by Orioles in Rule 5 minor league draft

Johnstown native and Ferndale graduate Trey McGough has been selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the MLB's Rule 5 minor league draft. The 24-year-old left hander originally signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 2019. McGough made his debut with the Altoona Curve in 2021 and appeared in 18 games with the Curve. local car dealership hosts 'family safety day'

WINDBER, Pa. (WJAC) — With proms, graduations, and Memorial Day coming up, it's important to make sure you and those around you are safe. To prepare, Memorial Highway Chevrolet in Windber hosted a Family Safety Day event on Saturday. "The last thing you tell your kids or your spouse when they leave is, 'be safe, be careful, drive safe,'" said Andi Palmar with Memorial Highway Chevrolet. First responders attended to teach local children, teens, and adults how to be safe in many situations.

Nearly all residents rehoused after Johnstown's Atrium care home announces closure

The Atrium, a nonprofit personal care center for low-income seniors, told us that almost all of its residents have found new homes. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, a personal care home offers housing, meals and assistance with medications and personal care tasks to seniors or people with physical, behavioral health, or cognitive disabilities who are unable to care for themselves but do not need nursing home or medical care.

Truck driver gets only traffic citations for Route 22 crash that killed 2, records show

EBENSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) – The driver of a coal truck that ran a red light on Route 22 near Ebensburg and killed two people is only facing traffic citations, court records show. Leonard Hite, 70, was cited for careless driving resulting in death and running a red light. The crash happened in May last year. Police said Hite ran the red light at the Unimart intersection hitting a car with Richard, 77, and Therese, 71, Dow and their dog inside.
