Bishop McCort's Bo Bassett qualifies for U20 team competing in Spain

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — On Saturday, Bishop McCort's Bo Bassett secured his spot on the U20 World Wrestling Team that will compete in Spain later this year. Bassett is one of three local wrestlers will represent the United States in international competition. Bo Bassett will join fellow Bishop McCort wrestlers Keegan Bassett and Melvin Miller in competing internationally. McCort’s Jax Forrest also attempted to qualify but lost in the finals.

Clearfield County holds first prison board meeting since firing prison warden

Clearfield Co., PA (WJAC) — Earlier this month, officials from Clearfield County made the decision to fire the prison's warden David Gallagher. On Tuesday, 6 News attended the county’s first prison board meeting since the decision, where residents voiced their complaints about how the prison has been operating. David Gallagher started working as the warden in October of last year. Since then, the Clearfield County jail has faced backlash from the community due to drug overdoses inside and even inmates escaping.

Flood City Music Festival ready to rock

JOHNSTOWN - The Flood City Music Festival kicks off Thursday night at Peoples Natural Gas Park in downtown. Grace Potter is the headline performer for the event. She will perform from 8 to 9:30 p.m. The festival announced that Charles Bradley, the Saturday night headliner, became ill on his European tour and will play. Marc Broussard and Anders Osborne, who regularly collaborate in the supergroup Southern Soul Assembly, will now play back-to-back sets on the main stage.

iCare to temporarily stop accepting COVID test requests due to backlog

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — iCare Urgent Care centers are temporarily stopping and restarting COVID-19 testing throughout the day so they can catch up on their backlog, officials say. They say this is due to an overwhelming demand and limited staffing and supplies. Officials say you may check their website one hour and it says no testing at the moment, but they do say check back again periodically to see if testing might be available again.

IRS Direct File program could be coming to a state near you

WASHINGTON (TND) — The Internal Revenue Service is expanding its program allowing Americans to file their taxes directly with the agency for free to all 50 states and making it a permanent option after what the agency saw as a successful trial run last tax season. A program to directly file taxes with the IRS would be a significant shift for the U.S., where a majority of taxpayers rely on paid services from private companies and has resulted in one of the highest voluntary tax compliance rates in the world.

'Companion Parrots:' local college professor publishes research on parrot vocal mimicry

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — It's common knowledge that parrots are great at mimicking human communication and everyday sounds. But a new study published by a local college professor in Cambria County is looking beyond what 'Polly' says. Dr. Christine Dahlin is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown who studies animal behavior. Her house is also home to Yoko, a 22-year-old energetic male cockatoo who loves to repeat new words and phrases.

Altoona community hosts vigil for slain 15-year-old

ALTOONA, Pa (WJAC) — People in Altoona came together Friday to remember the 15-year-old who was shot and killed this week. Members of the Altoona community gathered outside Jefferson Park for a vigil for Altoona School District student Devon Pfirsching, who was killed in a shooting Tuesday night. A wooden cross with Devon’s name inscribed is attached to the fence outside Overflow Church near Jefferson Park. A collection of flower bouquets has grown over the last several days as friends, neighbors and classmates stopped by to pay their respects.

CATA considering raising bus fare, route changes

STATE COLLEGE -- The Centre Area Transportation Authority is considering raising its bus fare and changing some of its routes this summer. The fare increase would affect both CATA-BUS and CATA-RIDE. Prices would go up on Aug. 1 and the route changes would take effect on Aug. 19. The case fare for a one-way trip would increase from $1.75 to $2. The reduced fare price would go up from 85 cents to $1.
