Social Security and Medicare benefits, and the retirement age necessary to receive those benefits, have been controversial political topics as the U.S. heads toward the 2024 presidential election. President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump both apparently support the programs.

Prosecutors file 10 new charges against school bus aide accused of beating child

LITTLETON, Colo. (TND) — Prosecutors in Colorado filed a motion to add 10 new charges against a school bus aide who was recently arrested for abusing a student who has special needs. An 11-page arrest affidavit noted 28-year-old Kiarra Jones, a paraprofessional for Littleton Public Schools, was charged in April with third-degree assault for allegedly assaulting an at-risk child with a disability on a school bus. She was released on a $5,000 surety bond and was ordered not to leave Colorado, according to the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office.

Reporter's mic shoved away when asking Florida mayor about homelessness crisis

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPEC) — A news reporter that tried asking a Florida mayor about the homeless problem had his microphone shoved away and told to "back off." The reporter, who works for WPEC, questioned Mayor Keith James about the growing homeless problem in downtown West Palm Beach. Shoppers, merchants and people who work in the area have told WPEC over and over the situation is out of control. Homeless panhandlers constantly badger people for money, snatch food off plates on sidewalk tables, hover over customers at ATMs and otherwise disrupt day to day life downtown.

Commanders' rookie RB Brian Robinson Jr. shot in D.C. in apparent carjacking

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot during an attempted robbery or carjacking, the NFL team said Sunday night. The 23-year-old former Alabama player was taken to a hospital with what the team called non-life-threatening injuries. The team said in a statement staff members were with Robinson at the hospital. Coach Ron Rivera said he had been with Robinson. “He is in good spirits and wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers & support,” Rivera said on Twitter.

Pentagon chief confirms US pause on weapons to Israel, says support still 'ironclad'

WASHINGTON (TND) — Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed Wednesday the U.S. recently decided to withhold crucial weapons from Israel, saying the move has no bearing on its “ironclad” support of the Jewish state. U.S. officials were believed to have paused a shipment of bombs to Israel last week to send a “political message” to the country. Defense officials reportedly worried Israel could use the weapons in an assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Thief broke into used bookstore for valuable books

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Police in suburban Philadelphia say a thief made off with rare and valuable books from a used bookstore, including a rare edition of "To Kill A Mockingbird." Baldwin Book's Barn manager Fred Dannaway says the thief took at least 20 rare books from a case at the front of the West Chester-area bookstore. Dannaway says the thief didn't touch money in the register and left behind other expensive books displayed on a nearby counter.
