Fourth person arrested in connection to viral Alabama riverfront brawl

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBMA) — A woman is now in custody and charged with third-degree assault in connection to a brawl that broke out last weekend on a riverfront dock in Montgomery. There are now four people charged in the incident, including three men who turned themselves in earlier this week. Mary Todd, 21, turned herself in Thursday. She is currently being held in city jail. Richard Roberts, 48, Zachery Shipman, 25, and Allen Todd, 23 are also facing third-degree assault charges.

Illinois lawmakers end session without addressing a Chicago Bears stadium

(TCS) — The Chicago Bears will have to wait on public assistance for a new stadium project. The Illinois legislature, which ended spring session early Wednesday, won’t act on anything regarding a new Bears stadium until this fall at the earliest, if at all. The Bears unveiled the project in April with a $4.7 billion price tag, which included a domed stadium and surrounding infrastructure. Illinois taxpayers would be asked to cover about $2 billion.

Lititz firefighter rushes into burning barn, rescues dog in emotional video

LANCASTER COUNTY — You might want to grab some tissues before reading this story. A Lititz Fire Company firefighter was caught on camera over the weekend rushing into a barn engulfed in flames to rescue the owner's pet dog from the blaze. On Saturday, the Lititz Fire Company, along with other fire companies, were dispatched to the 900 block of Erbs Quarry Road in Warwick Township for a barn fire. As the video begins, a resident of the farm adjacent to the barn fire is seen telling Lititz Fire Company firefighter Ryan Balmer that his was still inside the burning structure.

Man convicted of killing his girlfriend escapes from Pennsylvania prison

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — A man convicted this month of fatally stabbing his girlfriend in front of her children escaped Thursday from a suburban Philadelphia prison, authorities said. Danelo Cavalcante, 34, eluded guards at the Chester County Prison in West Chester before 9 a.m., and was seen nearly an hour later walking on a road near the prison, they said. A jury took just 15 minutes to convict Cavalcante of killing Deborah Brandao, his girlfriend of two years, at her home in Schuylkill Township in April 2021.

Pa. boy, 2, dies after accidently shooting self in chest

QUAKERTOWN - State police say a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot himself to death in a Pennsylvania home. Authorities say the boy was pronounced dead Monday shortly after suffering a single gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency medical personnel responded to the shooting around 11 a.m. at the home in Milford Township, Bucks County, north of Philadelphia. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether anyone was home at the time, how the child got the weapon and who owned the weapon.

Black bear kills 16-year-old boy during race in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska authorities have identified a 16-year-old boy who was fatally mauled by a black bear during a weekend mountain race as Patrick Cooper of Anchorage. Race organizers say Cooper reportedly called his brother while he was being chased by the animal just before the Sunday afternoon attack. Earlier reports say he texted his mother. Race director Brad Precosky says the boy was mauled after he got lost and veered off the trail during the juniors division of the Robert Spurr Memorial Hill Climb race south of Anchorage.

Curwensville Lake hosting pirate-themed event this weekend

CLEARFIELD CO, Pa (WJAC) — There will be a pirate-themed treasure and scavenger hunt this weekend at Curwensville Lake in Clearfield County. Activities will take place throughout the park, along the beach, and in the camping areas. Those activities include "message in a bottle" along with an "eye spy" hunting activity in which kids can search for pirate birds that are scattered around the area. This is one of many themed weekends at the lake planned for this summer.

Matt Canada expected to return as Steelers' OC in 2023

Pittsburgh (WJAC) — According to a report from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Matt Canada is expected to return as the Steelers' Offensive Coordinator for the 2023-24 season. Canada has one year remaining on his current contract and his expected return to the organization, in large part, can be credited to the team's overall improvement in the latter half of the season. Pittsburgh finished 7-2 following their bye week, which included winning six of their final seven games, despite being near the bottom of the league in almost every offensive, statistical category.

Straight F's, second call for Education Secretary Cardona to resign

WASHINGTON (TCS) — Grades of F overall, and in each of five specific areas with active hot-button issues, were given by a North Carolina congresswoman chairing a committee hearing with Education Department Secretary Miguel Cardona. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., greeted him nicely, reminding him how she welcomed a leader of his qualifications when he was confirmed. Then, the chairwoman of the Committee on Education and Workforce in the U.S. House of Representatives, in roughly eight minutes, gave description of ineptitude and failing for both K-12 and post-secondary education.

Water break damages part of Windber's historic Arcadia Theater

WINDBER, Pa. (WJAC) — Residents of Windber, Somerset County, may have seen firetrucks outside of the Arcadia Theater on Graham Ave. Wednesday evening. The theater is home to many performances and plays. According to theater officials, a sprinkler pipe broke in the generator room causing water to soak many parts of the historic building. The dressing rooms took the brunt of the water damage. Now, they're working with limited electricity and seeing what equipment needs replaced as they assess the damages.
