Last coal powered plant in Allegheny Co. demolished

Allegheny County, PA — The last coal-fired power plant in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County is no more. The smokestacks at the former Cheswick power plant came down Friday morning. The scheduled implosion of the two chimneys took place about a year after the plant officially closed. The two chimneys, one 552 feet tall and the other 750 feet tall, fell into the old coal yard to the north of the property.

MLB extends draft league through 2030; State College Spikes 'excited' for future

Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that it is extending the draft league through the year 2030. The league was created in 2021 following the MLB's realignment, which eliminated 40 teams from being minor league affiliates. Locally, the State College Spikes were among those teams that were no longer affiliated with a major league club. “We are excited that the MLB Draft League will continue to offer opportunities for up-and-coming players through 2030,” said Scott Walker, Spikes President & General Manager.

No one injured after car crashes into Blair County salon

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — 911 officials in Blair County say no one was hurt after a car slammed into a local salon Monday morning. According to dispatchers, crews were called to the Tame Your Mane hair salon, in East Freedom, around 9:30 a.m. for a reported crash. Authorities say despite there being people inside the salon at the time of the incident, no injuries were reported. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Cambria County Prison will get X-ray scanner

EBENSBURG — Cambria County will spend more than $77,000 on an X-ray scanner for the county prison, in the wake of two incidents earlier this year in which two female inmates overdosed inside the prison. The scanner, which the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection didn't allow inside prisons until recently, will help keep contraband including drugs and weapons out of the prison, said Cambria County Prison Warden Christian Smith. SCI Smithfield inmate files civil, criminal complaints after boots were confiscated

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- An inmate at SCI Smithfield is suing two top Pennsylvania Department of Corrections officials and is asking for criminal charges to be filed after he was forced to relinquish his three pairs of Timberland boots. Robert Fennell has filed a lawsuit against Eastern Region Deputy Secretary Michael Wenerowicz and SCI Smithfield Superintendent Eric Tice after three pairs of Timberland boots were confiscated and he was not reimbursed following the DOC mandate on hard-sole boots.

Volunteers needed for 2023 Thunder in the Valley, organizers say

Johnstown, PA (WJAC) — Organizers of the annual Thunder in the Valley Motorcycle Rally in Johnstown announced that volunteers are still needed for this year's event. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Thunder in the Valley, which will take place from June 22-25.
