5 charged in string of sexual assaults, trafficking throughout Altoona, police say

CamTran exploring options for major repairs of Johnstown Inclined Plane

JOHNSTOWN -- It's a popular attraction for visitors and the community but according to Cambria County Transit Authority officials, major repairs may be underway for the Johnstown Inclined Plane this fall. "We are going to try to cooordinate this so most of the work is done in the down time. We may have to close a little early this fall and may open a little late next spring," said the chairman of the CamTran board, Ed Cernic Jr.

Penn State CB Joey Porter Jr. to opt out of bowl game, declares for NFL Draft

University Park, PA (WJAC) — Penn State's star defensive-back Joey Porter Jr. announced on social media Wednesday that he is opting out of the Nittany Lions' bowl game this season and will declare for the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. Porter Jr. played in 10 games this season for the Nittany Lions, recording 21 solo tackles, 11 passes defended and one fumble recovery. The redshirt junior is expected to be a high-end draft pick in 2023.

Members of Punxsutawney Phil's “inner circle” summoned him from his tree stump at dawn to learn if he had seen his shadow, a message they say Phil communicated in “Groundhogese.” According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather.

Founder of popular Somerset Co. restaurant passes away

WINDBER, Pa. (WJAC) — Mildred Rizzo, founder of the popular Somerset County Italian restaurant Rizzo’s, died Tuesday morning, according to family members. Rizzo was the matriarch of the Rizzo family and founded the restaurant in 1965. She was inducted to the Greater Johnstown--Cambria County Business Hall of Fame in 2013. Huntingdon County DA says investigations ongoing into deaths of Trooper Weaver, Robison

HUNTINGDON – Huntingdon County District Attorney David Smith said Friday that the investigations into the shooting death of Pennsylvania State Trooper Landon Weaver last month and the Dec. 31 officer-involved shooting death of suspect Jason Robison are ongoing. But Smith said that based on a preliminary review of the evidence, he believes that the actions taken by a member of the state police were justified in the shooting death of Robison.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Washington State University wants the public’s help to choose a trademark name for an apple. "WA 64" is a "pink blushed apple with outstanding eating quality, being both firm and tasty," officials said in a press release on Tuesday. The apple release from Washington State University originated from a cross between Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink (aka Pink Lady) that was made in 1998 at the Wenatchee Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center, officials said.

Local Quaker meeting hosts journalist and author Cody McDevitt at Still Listening series

The Dunnings Creek Friends Meeting, a local Quaker meeting, hosted journalist and author Cody McDevitt of Somerset as the first speaker in their ‘Still Listening’ guest speaker series on local history in September. McDevitt spoke about his book,"Banished From Johnstown: Racist Backlash in Western Pennsylvania," which tells the story of one of the worst civil rights injustices in the history of our state. When in 1923, the mayor of Johnstown ordered over 2,000 Black and Latino residents were forcibly evicted out of Johnstown after the fatal shooting of four policemen.

Steelers rookie QB Roethlisberger makes his mark in 2004 season

JOHNSTOWN — The National Football League can't host in-person offseason workout programs because of COVID-19. So, WJAC-TV decided to take a look back at the Pittsburgh Steelers' May 2004 mini camp--the first practices for rookie quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Earlier in the spring, the Steelers selected Roethlisberger with the 11th overall pick in the NFL Draft. He came to Pittsburgh as a bright-eyed rookie. After the team's first practice, Roethlisberger told reporters he had to deal with nerves.
